Launching CERES

New center for the development of digital technologies for children: Garvin Brod’s lab part of CERES

As part of its commitment to advancing research on children’s learning, the Jacobs Foundation is investing nearly $11 million to create a research network that will combine and support various efforts to develop digital learning technologies. Led by the University of California, Irvine, this has created “Connecting the EdTech Research EcoSystem” (CERES), which will bring together world-leading scientists in computer science, psychology, neuroscience, education, and educational technology.

In addition to Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Cambridge and other world-leading institutions, the DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Human Development and Educational Information is among the participating institutions.

Professor Candice Odgers, who Co-leads CERES at the University of California, Irvine with Vice Provost Gillian Hayes, commented that “Professor Brod is pushing the boundaries of psychology and educational research to personalize learning for individual students. His team has been able to tailor learning experiences for children to help them meet their full potential – something that will be critical in supporting all children as they re-enter classrooms following closures from the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Garvin Brod: “We are very happy to be part of this network. We will be able to work with brilliant researchers who share our goals. Thanks to the opportunities offered by CERES, we can bring our efforts regarding targeted support for children to a whole new level.”
